The constant need to pause videos to reply to messages may soon be over, thanks to a new feature being tested by Instagram. A Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels is in a limited trial, aiming to let users watch and reply simultaneously, creating a more fluid social experience.
This new functionality is designed to be effortless. When a user is watching a Reel and switches to another app, the video will shrink into a small player that floats on the screen. This allows the user to continue enjoying their content while typing a message, checking email, or browsing the web, effectively eliminating a common point of friction.
This is a powerful update for the creator community, whose success often depends on video watch time. By allowing content to persist through interruptions, the PiP mode can lead to a marked increase in video completion rates. It ensures a creator’s work can coexist with, rather than compete against, an audience’s social life.
In concert with this feature, Instagram has also launched a native iPad app. This provides a clean, optimized interface for tablet users, making the platform more accessible and enjoyable on larger screens. Both initiatives are geared toward enhancing user convenience and engagement.
