President Donald Trump has expressed significant doubts about the current ceasefire with Iran, describing it as being on “life support.” He is considering the reintroduction of U.S. Navy escorts for ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz in a bid to counter Iran’s blockade of this critical maritime passage. Trump’s remarks followed his outright dismissal of Iran’s recent peace proposals, which he labeled as “stupid,” while also denying any internal pressure to negotiate a deal.
Discussing the ceasefire, which has been in effect since April 7, Trump criticized the Iranian proposals, saying, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it.” He likened the situation to a dire medical prognosis, suggesting the ceasefire had only a “1% chance of living.”
Recently, the U.S. had proposed a set of conditions to Iran aimed at de-escalating tensions, primarily focused on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. However, Iran’s counter-proposals were swiftly rejected by Trump. In response to the ongoing situation, Trump halted Project Freedom last week, a plan to provide military escorts for oil tankers through the Strait, after just two days. This decision was made to allow Iran time to respond to the U.S. peace initiatives, though it was met with resistance from Saudi Arabia, which opposed the plan due to its potentially escalatory nature.
Trump’s latest comments came after a surge in oil prices, driven by Iran’s declaration that further discussions to resolve the Hormuz blockade would only proceed if their terms were met. These terms include ending the conflict on all fronts, lifting sanctions, releasing blocked funds, compensating for war damages, and recognizing Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, underscored Iran’s position by stating that negotiations would not resume unless these conditions were satisfied, highlighting the ongoing complexity and fragility of the situation.
