Iran Proposes Reopening Strait of Hormuz if US Lifts Sanctions

by admin477351

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has indicated that the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within six days, contingent on the United States agreeing to Tehran’s conditions. These conditions include lifting restrictions on Iranian ports, removing sanctions on its oil exports, and ceasing hostilities in the region. Araghchi mentioned that Iran is currently reviewing Washington’s response to its proposal, and negotiations could potentially resume soon.

The ongoing negotiations face significant challenges, primarily due to disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program. The United States insists that discussions on nuclear issues, particularly uranium enrichment, should be prioritized. In contrast, Iran wants the initial focus to be on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring security in the crucial waterway. The strait is a vital global shipping route, previously responsible for about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas trade. Its prolonged closure poses risks to international energy supplies and fuel prices.

Adding to the tensions, Iranian Defence Minister Mehrdad Akhlaghi has warned that any renewed US military action could result in substantial damage to the US and its regional allies. He emphasized Iran’s readiness to respond to further attacks, underpinning the fragile state of relations between the two nations.

Despite the proposed timeline for reopening the strait, the significant differences between Washington and Tehran over the terms of ending hostilities create uncertainty about the prospects for a diplomatic resolution. The path forward remains unclear, as both sides grapple with reconciling their strategic interests and addressing mutual concerns.
