Canada Seeks Exclusive EU Alliance Amid Trade Strains with US

by admin477351

Canada is set to initiate discussions with the European Union (EU) to form a unique security and economic alliance, as stated by Prime Minister Mark Carney at the inaugural Canada Investment Summit in Toronto. This move aims to diversify Canada’s international partnerships in light of ongoing trade tensions with the United States.

Addressing the summit attendees, Carney emphasized the importance of bolstering Canada’s domestic economy while expanding international collaborations. He highlighted Canada as a stable destination for global investment, underscoring the need for enhanced economic resilience. The proposed alliance will explore deeper collaboration in areas including defence, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, energy, technology, and financial services.

Currently, Canada is the only non-European member of the EU’s defence procurement initiative. Both Canada and the EU are eager to expand their existing trade relationship beyond the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), focusing on strategic sectors to fortify their partnership.

During the summit, nearly C$500 billion in new investment commitments were announced, sourced from pension funds, financial institutions, and other investors. Additionally, the Canadian government introduced a new Productivity Mega Deduction, designed to enable businesses to recover investment costs more swiftly.

Carney also revealed plans to attract private investment through long-term concessions to operate Canada’s four largest airports, while ensuring federal ownership of the underlying assets remains intact. Despite these efforts to strengthen ties with Europe, Carney acknowledged the United States’ continued significance as an economic and strategic partner due to the close geographic and economic links between the two nations.

As talks progress, Canada and the EU are working to define the parameters of their enhanced partnership, with discussions centering on trade, investment, security, and strategic supply chains.
