Us-Canada trade negotiations have ended after president Donald Trump labeled a Canadian ad “fraudulent” and “fake.”
The ad, sponsored by Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan warning against tariffs. Trump called this “egregious behavior” in a post on social media.
He claimed the ad was an attempt to interfere with US supreme court hearings on his 35% tariffs on Canadian goods.
The ad has also been criticized by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation for using “selective audio” to “misrepresent” the full speech.
The halt in talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, escalates the trade war and jeopardizes a vital economic partnership.
