Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with President Donald Trump in Florida this Sunday for crucial discussions on an emerging peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. The announcement comes as negotiators report substantial progress, with the proposed framework reportedly 90% complete.
The planned summit at Trump’s Florida location will focus on refining the most critical aspects of the peace proposal. Zelenskyy stated that the meeting would address sensitive topics including Ukrainian security guarantees, reconstruction plans, and territorial arrangements for the Donbas region and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The Ukrainian president emphasized that both Ukrainian and American negotiating teams have made significant advances in recent days.
Central to Ukraine’s position are demands for robust security assurances comparable to NATO’s mutual defense commitments. However, whether Moscow would accept such provisions remains unclear, as Russia continues to maintain maximalist demands. Zelenskyy acknowledged that Russia persistently looks for reasons to reject peace proposals, complicating efforts to reach a final agreement. The proposed deal represents an evolution of earlier frameworks that Ukraine viewed as too favorable to Russian interests.
President Trump indicated he expects a productive meeting but made clear that proposals require his approval before implementation. The American president also mentioned plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon, suggesting ongoing engagement with both parties to the conflict. Recent diplomatic activity included separate meetings in Miami between American representatives and Russian and Ukrainian officials, described by Washington as constructive.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, military operations continue. Saturday morning brought missile attacks on Kyiv, with explosions and air defense activations across Ukraine. However, Ukraine recently scored a significant military success by retaking Kupiansk, demonstrating continuing battlefield capabilities and exposing problems with Russian military reporting. Both sides maintain military pressure while exploring potential paths toward a negotiated settlement.
