China has issued a warning to the United States, urging careful handling of issues related to Taiwan following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration of his intention to communicate with Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te. The prospect of a direct conversation between a U.S. president and Taiwan’s president is a sensitive matter for Beijing. China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and strongly opposes any official foreign interactions with the island’s authorities.
China maintains that Taiwan is a breakaway province destined for reunification with the mainland, potentially by force if necessary. The Chinese government consistently objects to foreign governments treating Taiwan as an independent nation, and it frequently condemns high-level diplomatic interactions with Taipei. Chinese officials have cautioned that such actions could send misleading signals to advocates of Taiwan independence and constitute interference in China’s domestic affairs.
The issue of Taiwan has become increasingly tense in recent years. In 2022, China conducted extensive military exercises around Taiwan in response to a visit by a senior U.S. official. Additionally, Beijing has expressed strong opposition to U.S. arms sales and political support for Taiwan. Despite this, Taiwan identifies itself as a self-governing democracy, officially named the Republic of China, and its government dismisses Beijing’s claims of sovereignty, asserting the right of its people to elect their leaders and engage in international relations.
The United States adheres to the “One China” policy, which involves diplomatic recognition of Beijing while maintaining unofficial ties with Taiwan. Under the Taiwan Relations Act, Washington also provides Taiwan with defensive weapons. In 2016, Trump engaged in a conversation with former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, marking a rare direct contact that was met with criticism from China. A potential new call between Trump and Lai could exacerbate already strained U.S.-China relations and possibly provoke fresh Chinese military activities near Taiwan.
